Usually, the reasons for removing buried sutures are dissatisfaction with the shape, or a functional side effect —

for example, the suture pulling — and for these various reasons, many patients wish to have them removed.

In buried-suture removal, tiny openings are made in the skin to locate and remove the sutures,

and usually about 1 to 3 openings are made.

Before surgery — Buried Suture Removal

This is before the buried-suture removal.

In this patient's case, only one opening was made to remove the suture.

This patient had buried-suture surgery 3 years and 6 months earlier,

and wanted the double eyelid undone, saying the eyes looked overly heavy.

However, since the surgery was so long ago, we were a little unsure whether it would actually come undone,

but since the sutures could at least be removed, we decided to try removing them.

After surgery — Buried Suture Removal

This is right after the buried-suture removal.

Right after surgery, the double eyelid begins to look as if it is slightly coming undone,

though it has not fully come undone yet.

But even after just a few days, you can see it come undone considerably,

After surgery — Buried Suture Removal

This is 3 days after the buried-suture removal.

It will probably continue to come undone further over time,

and usually, within about a week to a month, it comes undone considerably.

Very rarely, there are occasional cases where it does not come undone even after the sutures are removed.

In this patient's case, the buried-suture procedure was done 11 months earlier.

The shape was not to their liking,

and since the patient originally had a natural double eyelid,

they said they wanted to return to their original line, so we performed the procedure.

Usually, when we remove the sutures,

in order to reassure patients that the suture has definitely been removed,

we take a confirmation photo like this when the suture is taken out.

So we remove the suture this way and always show it to the patients.

This patient, too, originally had something like an inner double eyelid,

and wanted the double eyelid undone, so we performed the procedure.

We always tell our patients this:

this is not surgery to undo the double eyelid, but surgery to remove the sutures,

and in most cases, removing the sutures can undo it.

But there are cases where it does not come undone, so please be sure to keep that in mind.

This patient's buried suture was a clear thread,

whereas if the suture is black or a colored thread, such as a blue thread,

in those cases it is somewhat easier to find,

while a clear thread is, understandably, relatively harder to find.

This patient had buried-suture surgery at another clinic,

but the line came out too high and was not to their liking,

so they visited us the very next day.

This was a case where we removed the buried sutures right away and performed double-eyelid revision surgery the same day.

Because it becomes much more natural and improves as time passes,

when little time has passed since the surgery, early re-correction can be done right away;

but if some time has passed since the surgery, after removing the sutures,

we recommend later doing either the buried-suture method again or the incision method.
